Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to Canterbury Road in Faversham to a derelict building well alight. Four fire engines attended and crews evacuated approximately 12 people from nearby homes as a precaution, before spraying foam on the properties to protect them from the heat. Firefighters used foam to knock the fire back and attacked the blaze with two main jets. There were no reported injuries and the fire, which destroyed 100% of the building filled with wooden furniture, is believed to have been started deliberately.During this incident a family in a nearby property alerted firefighters to a fire in one of their bedrooms. It was believed to have started after an ember from the derelict building fire floated into the room through an open window. Crews wearing breathing apparatus put the fire out with a hose reel jet. Following this secondary fire, firefighters are highlighting the importance of closing windows and doors. If there’s a fire in your home and it’s safe to do so, contain it by closing doors as you leave the property to reduce fire spread. If there is a fire near your home remember to close windows and doors to prevent smoke or embers entering. Such a simple step can make a huge difference to the outcome.
