30+ Incident Monday 09 August 2021 00:39
Maidstone
A shed was destroyed by fire after embers from a barbecue caused it to catch alight. Two fire engines were sent to Hastings Road, Maidstone, and crews wore breathing apparatus while using hose reel jets to extinguish the flames, which had also spread to trees and a neighbouring shed. No casualties were reported. It’s believed the fire started accidentally when embers from a charcoal barbecue that had been used earlier on in the evening, and had not fully cooled, were blown into the shed and caused it to catch alight. Following the incident, crews are reminding people to take extra care when positioning and lighting any outdoor fire. You can help to reduce the risk of an emergency by following these simple safety tips: - Make sure your barbecue, brazier or fire pit is in good working order - Ensure it is positioned on a flat surface - Keep the fire well away from any property, sheds, fences and overhanging branches, which could easily catch fire - Keep children and pets well away from the fire - Never leave it unattended and ensure the fire is fully out before leaving - Empty spent ashes onto bare garden soil
