Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) delivers hundreds of fire safety lessons to thousands of children and adults each year, to help create a safer future for Kent and Medway.

Alongside emergency response, work to prevent incidents and keep people safe and well forms an equally important part of the fire service.

Working in nurseries and schools, as well as other settings for adults, the education team has a crucial role in teaching young people and adults how to stay safe and what to do in an emergency – tailoring lessons to suit the needs of students. 

KFRS Education Officer David said: “We aren’t firefighters, but we save lives in a different way - through education to prevent incidents happening in the first place.

“Every member of our education team is passionate about making sure children and young people grow up learning the information they need to keep themselves safe, and also teaching and refreshing adults’ understanding of safety – because we never stop learning.

“In addition to schools, we also deliver fire safety talks in places like care homes, foster care, retirement groups, and at public events. It’s all about getting out and about in the community, and we can cover a range of topics in addition to fire safety based on who we’re working with - such as road safety, anti-social behaviour, and even personal safety.

“The most important thing for us is that people leave our sessions with the knowledge and tools they need to keep themselves and other from harm, and know what to do should they ever find themselves in an emergency situation.”

Education services at Kent Fire and Rescue Service are free and available for all education and care settings across Kent and Medway.
