Join KFRS as an on-call or day-crewed wholetime firefighter

18 August 2025

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is now recruiting for both on-call and day-crewed wholetime firefighters at fire stations across Kent and Medway.

Potential new recruits, Service development

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is calling on people across the county to consider two rewarding ways to serve their community, either as an on-call or day-crewed wholetime firefighter.

Both roles are vital to providing an emergency response to people in need of help. Day-crewed work shift-hours during the day from station and then standby at night from home. On-call are primarily available whilst carrying out other activities, whilst wearing a pager.

As an on-call or day-crewed wholetime firefighter, you’ll be responding to a range of incidents, such as fires, water rescues and crashes, but you’ll also be engaging with the public and raising awareness of fire safety, while offering support when it’s needed.

Full training is provided and there’s a range of benefits available, including:

  • Development and career progression opportunities

  • Family-friendly policies to promote work-life balance

  • Free gym facilities

  • A generous holiday allowance

  • Access to free health and wellbeing services

  • Discounts for Blue Light Card holders

Nick Scott, Area Manager for KFRS said: “This is a really exciting time to join KFRS, so we’re pleased to be able to offer opportunities for both on-call and day-crewed firefighters.

“We’re continuing to invest in innovative equipment and technology to enhance our response and protect the wellbeing of our crews – which could soon include you.

“So, if you’re considering a new and varied role that requires compassion, professionalism and a commitment to helping people, then we want to hear from you."

On-call firefighters carry a pager and respond to emergency incidents via their local fire station. They can have other jobs and are able to provide evening, daytime or weekend cover, committing at least 50 hours a week.

Applications to become an on-call firefighter are open from today (18 August 2025) until 3 October 2025.

Day-crewed wholetime firefighters work 24-hour shifts, which bases them at their designated fire station between 9am and 7pm, and between 7pm and 9am they’re on-call at home, when they carry a pager.

Applications to become a day-crewed wholetime firefighter are open from today (18 August 2025) until 19 September 2025.

For both roles, applicants must be able to travel to their designated fire station and be operationally ready within five minutes.
