Summer safety starts with you
22 May 2026
With the summer season approaching, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is urging everyone to enjoy the warm weather responsibly.
Seasonal safety
People in Kent and Medway are being urged to enjoy the warmer weather responsibly to help reduce the risk of an emergency.
The advice comes from Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) ahead of the bank holiday weekend when temperatures are expected to rise.
Gary Miller, Station Manager and Wildfire Lead Officer at KFRS, said: “We want people to enjoy the sunshine but to do safely and to be mindful of any possible risks.
“A poor or irresponsible choice could lead to serious consequences, such as a fire or another type of emergency, so we all need to do our bit to help keep everyone safe.”
KFRS’ top tips for summer safety:
Barbecues and outdoor fires
- Make sure barbecues and outdoor fires, including, bonfires, fire pits and chimineas, are positioned well away from trees, fences, property and dry grass.
- Never leave a barbecue or fire unattended while it’s lit.
- Only light disposable barbecues in designated areas and once finished, dowse them with water to ensure they are fully extinguished and cooled.
- Never put ashes straight into a dustbin or wheelie bin. Empty the cooled, spent ashes on to bare garden soil.
Water
- Be cautious in open water - it may be colder than it looks, contain strong currents, or have hidden hazards.
- Only swim in designated areas, ideally with a lifeguard present, and let someone know where you are.
- Avoid walking near areas of water if you’ve been drinking alcohol.
- If you get into trouble, float with your head back, ears submerged. If you need to, gently move your hands and legs to help to stay afloat. Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.
- If you spot someone struggling in water, Make the Right Call and call 999. If it’s inland water, ask for the fire and service and if it’s coastal, ask for the coastguard.
Gary added: “During spells of warm weather, grass can become extremely dry, and this can cause fires to spread rapidly, so remember not to throw cigarettes onto the ground and take your litter home with you.
"And not everyone enjoys the heat, so check-in on any neighbours or loved ones who might be struggling and make sure they have everything they need to keep cool.
“Let’s all take responsibility and enjoy a safe summer.”
