The decision was made at an extraordinary meeting, six weeks after members were given additional time to create a cross-party group to examine Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s (KFRS) recommendations further and put forward any additional proposals. 

KFRS’ Chief Executive Ann Millington said: “We have a duty to provide an emergency service the people of Kent and Medway deserve and expect, and that involves forward-planning and adapting to meet the ever-changing needs of our communities, all while being financially viable.  

“Our proposals were formed based on comprehensive data and evidence, with an aim to improve availability and efficiency, strengthening daytime cover, while easing financial pressures. 

“Other suggestions put forward by the cross-party working group, which included KMFRA members and union representatives, were not financially viable at a time when cost pressures are increasing.  

“We would never propose to close a fire station without valid reasons or thorough consideration, and we had amended our initial proposals to include appropriate review periods.  

“Today’s outcome is disappointing, as there isn’t an alternative proposal to address the need for more day-time cover. But it does not affect our ongoing commitment to protect the public and to be there when they need our help.  

“Our crews and teams do an excellent job and remain dedicated to providing a service that keeps everyone in the county safe and reduces the risk of harm.”
