The UK’s traditional telephone network, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), is being replaced with digital technology, with most people expected to move to digital services by January 2027.
To ensure residents and business owners are prepared, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is reminding people to check any landline-based devices or alert systems are compatible with the upgrades.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is urging people to check their homes and businesses are prepared for upcoming changes to telephone landlines, which may affect fire and safety devices.
The UK’s traditional telephone network, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), is being replaced with digital technology, with most people expected to move to digital services by January 2027.
The change may affect safety equipment which currently uses a traditional telephone line, including:
• Fire alarms
• Intruder alarms
• Lift emergency telephones
• Door entry systems
• Lifeline and telecare alarms
Daniel Noonan, KFRS' Head of Prevention and Protection, said: "If you have a device or alert system which relies on a traditional telephone - both at home or at a business - it's important to check with your communication provider or equipment manufacturer to ensure it will work correctly once the upgrade is completed.
"If you are responsible for fire safety in a premises, including care homes, you a have a duty to check whether any fire alarm or other life-safety equipment relies on a traditional telephone line.
"We'd also urge people to check on neighbours or loved ones who might be affected and help them to check their systems are compatible with the new system."
The switch from PSTN to digital services is being led by the communications and telecomms industry, and there's also further advice from KFRS' building safety team, here.
