Prepare for your interview and assessment day
Below is a summary of the selection process when applying to become an on-call firefighter. Further details and guidance will be sent to you by email throughout the process.
- Online assessment – This online psychometric assessment helps us understand how your skills and behaviours match those required for the role of a firefighter.
- Practical and fitness assessment – If successful at the previous stages, you’ll take part in a practical and fitness assessment. See the fitness section above for more information about the assessment and how you can prepare.
- Interview – The interview will last around one hour and will take place at KFRS Headquarters. You’ll be asked questions about cultural sensitivity and awareness, integrity, teamwork, empathy, reliability, communication skills, and equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Group exercise – You’ll take part in a group exercise so we can assess your ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Medical – After these stages, you’ll need to undertake a medical assessment. This will assess your general health, including your weight, blood pressure and lung function. You’ll also have hearing and eyesight tests.
- Agreeing hours – We’ll discuss your availability in more detail to understand when you’re able to be on call for us.
