The role of an on-call firefighter

As an on-call firefighter, you will respond to emergencies when your pager sounds. The role is flexible, allowing you to fit it around your family and other work commitments with a mix of daytime, evening, and weekend shifts.

Who we're looking for / eligibility requirements

On-call firefighters come from all walks of life. As well as having an interest in supporting your local community, we’re looking for individuals who can work under pressure, have good communication skills and are able to work well as part of a team.

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • be aged 18 or over when you apply. There is no upper age limit.
  • live or work within five minutes of your local fire station, so you can get to the station within the required turnout time
  • have the right to work in the UK
  • be able to commit to the training dates specified in the job advert
  • meet the required level of fitness
Pay

Your annual salary is based on the number of hours you’re available to be on call each week.

You will receive additional payments for attending incidents, extra training and pre-planned additional activities.

Firefighter salary:

 Basic annualBasic hourly rateOvertime rate
Trainee on-call firefighter£31,539£14.40£21.60
Competent on-call firefighter£40,358£18.43£27.65

Hours

We are looking for a commitment of approximately 50 hours per week at agreed pre-determined times and days. Although you will be ‘available’ for these 50 hours, it doesn’t mean that you will be working for that amount of time. You can continue with your normal life at home or work, but if you get a call on your pager, you must be able to drop what you are doing and get to the station in time for the fire engine to respond to the emergency within five minutes.

We may consider applications from people who can offer fewer hours, depending on the cover available and the needs of the station you are applying to.
