Be seasonally safe this autumn and winter

21 October 2026

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is reminding people across Kent and Medway how to stay safe at home during the colder months.

Residents in Kent and Medway can help reduce the risk of fire and other emergencies this autumn and winter by taking simple precautions at home and on the roads.

As the weather turns colder, people will start reaching for electric blankets and heaters or lighting their fireplaces for the first time in months. Before using them, it’s important to check that everything is in good working order.

Heather Heath, Group Manager at Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS), said: “As the seasons change, so do the risks. Colder weather and rising energy bills may lead us to find different ways to keep warm at home – but it’s important to do so safely and responsibly.

“You can help us to reduce the risk of an emergency and protect your home and your loved ones, by following our simple tips:

  • Have your chimney and flue swept before lighting a fire and have them maintained regularly.
  • Check electrical blankets for any wear and tear, and if there’s any damage – don’t use it.
  • Keep electrical heaters away from anything flammable and switch them off when not in use.
  • Use battery-operated candles but if you’re lighting a real one, make sure they are positioned on solid, non-burnable surfaces and never left unattended while lit.

Heather added: “With the increased chance of flooding, poor visibility or frost at this time of year, it’s also important to adapt your driving to match the conditions and take extra care.

"We'd encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with the support services available, so you can get the help you might need. However, remember, if there is an immediate risk to life, always call 999.”

If you have vulnerable neighbours or loved ones, or know someone who lives alone, check in on them and make sure they’re ok and have everything they need. A simple check-in can make a big difference to their wellbeing.
